Inspiring Ideas to Celebrate National Maritime Day

It’s weird if we think that there are more people who have been in space compared to people who went under the deep ocean. But that’s why we’ve got National Maritime Day to celebrate every May 22nd. This is also my favorite day in the vastly varied may national days 2023. It’s the day when we honor the brave folks who venture into the uncharted depths of the sea, as well as those that help make maritime travel safer and more efficient.

And we’re here to help you celebrate in true sailor style with the best ideas for honoring our nation’s seafaring heritage. Whether you want to learn about maritime history, observe a moment of appreciation for those who work on the water or just party like it’s 1776 (just kidding), there are plenty of inspiring ways to make this day special. So, aboard you go as we provide some real-life sailing solutions sure to set your sea legs into motion.

Go On a Maritime History Tour

Educating yourself on the history of maritime exploration is one of the best ways to celebrate National Maritime Day. Gaining insight into how our nation’s seafaring heritage has evolved helps us pay tribute to and appreciate this remarkable industry. Whether you’re a fan of maritime fiction, military vessels, or modern-day passenger ships, there are several ways to tour shipyards, boat docks, and maritime museums. Check out your local area for any nearby land-based tours, or consider enrolling in one of many cruise offerings dedicated to educating passengers on the history and evolution of ship technology.

Visit a Lighthouse

Guess what? I’m not blaming you if the first idea I mentioned was a bit off the mark. But you know what? Visiting a lighthouse is an awesome way to pay homage to the intrepid adventurers who spend their days and nights on the open seas. While there are many lighthouses to choose from, some of the most iconic lighthouses in America include Portland Head Light in Maine, Cape Hatteras Light in North Carolina, Pigeon Point Light Station in California, and of course, the world-famous Montauk Lighthouse in New York.

Have a Picnic on the Beach and Admire the Beauty of Boats Sailing By

But what if you’re more into a short family trip that’s more casual and laid back? Then why not gather the gang, pack a few sandwiches, and head to your nearest beach for some relaxation time? Take in the awe-inspiring view of boats sailing by while you enjoy a picnic lunch, or pick up a pair of binoculars to spot any smaller vessels you can find. If you’re lucky, some folks on that boat might wish you all a Happy National Maritime Day.

Throw a Cruise Party

cruiseCalling all sea-farers! If you’re looking for the perfect way to honor National Maritime Day, why not throw a cruise party? Invite your friends over and decorate with maritime touches like anchors, life preservers, and sailboats. You can board ‘ship’ by playing nautical-themed games and eating dishes inspired by the sea. If you really want to make it a night to remember, rent out a boat or charter a private yacht for your own personal National Maritime Day celebration.

Guys, our ancestors, at least those living in the US, were indeed the ones who explored and crossed the seven seas, so why don’t we honor them with a celebration of our own? Whether you choose to go for a hands-on maritime history tour, visit a lighthouse, have a picnic on the beach, or throw your own cruise party, make sure this National Maritime Day is one for the record books.
